Like it was said in the Game of Thrones TV series – Winter is Coming.
The ‘winter babies’ that couldn’t cope with the constant sweating and mosquito-filled nights will be breathing the biggest sighs of relief for the cooler weather.
The 20th of March signified the end of Summer, with Autumn slowly moving in and with it comes the colder days until Winter arrives in June. Summer apparel like dresses, short pants and slippers will soon be packed away and replaced with boots, jackets and scarves. Not to mention, car heaters will be commuter’s best companion.
These are some of the appliances that use the most electricity inside households across South Africa:
- Pool pump
- Washing machines
Eskom’s power grid will most likely be put under pressure during winter as more households will be using their heating appliances. Gumtree lists some of the non-electrical items you should stock up on before winter makes itself known in the coming months:
Hot water bottle
The hot water bottle is the next best thing when a heater is not nearby. All you need is boiling water, and be careful to seal the stopper securely so that there is no leakage. After about 10 minutes or so, the water will eventually cool down, and you’ll need to boil and refill it again, but your body is warmed up by that time. There are also ones that warm up the water inside the bottle using a charger.
A thick pair of socks and gloves
Because the hands and feet are constantly exposed, they are one of the first parts of the body to feel the bite of the cold weather. Sometimes rubbing your hands together and wearing regular socks isn’t enough. Almost any clothing shop sells thicker insulated gloves (usually cotton) and socks with excellent heat retention capabilities.
They are warm and very comfortable because it basically acts as a body blanket. From animals to superheroes, there are so many designs to choose from and, as a form of nostalgia, takes adults back to their childhood days. The only downside of wearing them is, if you have to visit the toilet, for example, the entire onesie has to be taken off (via a zip or buttons).
Sit by the fire
There is no better heat source than sitting around a good old-fashioned fire. For those fortunate enough to have a built-in fireplace, it will warm the inside of a house better than a heater can. The only thing needed is a good supply of wood to keep it going for however long you want – and you can even roast marshmallows too!
Even though it does use a bit of electricity, an electric blanket can instantly turn an ice-cold bed into a warm and toasty place by the flick of a switch. The blanket is placed underneath the fitted sheet and is operated via a hand-held control where the user can adjust the heat setting either higher or lower to suit their preference.
