What You Need To Know About Car Seats

Did you know it is illegal to drive in South Africa with a child that is not secured into an approved car seat? This is an excellent regulation as buying a car seat is considered one of the most important decisions you take for your child’s safety. However, it is essential you do your due diligence and choose a model that is right for your child’s age and build.

Gumtree explains what you need to know before investing in the right car seat.

  1. Car seats are available for three stages: infant, toddler and child booster.
  2. Infant car seat: These car seats are designed with a bucket shape that holds the baby snugly. It comes with a 5-point harness and must always be facing backwards. It is not recommended to put the baby front facing before they are 1 year old or 13 kgs for their safety.
  3. Toddler car seats: These car seats are designed for children from 13 kgs to 18 kgs (or if there is a higher weight cut off prescribed by the particular manufacturer). At this stage, the child can be forward-facing. The toddler car seats are available in two formats: convertible and rear facing. The former can be used as a forward- and rear- facing seat, while the latter is exclusively rear-facing.
  4. Child booster seat: These car seats are ideally used for children between the weight range of 15 kgs and 36 kgs. It is recommended that you invest in a high-backed booster seat that provides ‘wings’ for greater protection, especially on the sides for additional protection of the child’s neck and head.
