To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Golf R, Volkswagen is launching an exclusive special edition Golf R ’20 Years’ that will see production limited to just a single year to preserve exclusivity.
Some of the visible changes include blue-finishing on the 19-inch Estoril alloy wheels and side mirror backings as well as the ‘R’ logos on the multifunction sport steering wheel and on the vehicle key cap. For the first time in a production Volkswagen, the dash panel and door trim feature decorative trim elements in Genuine Carbon.
The standard Golf 8 R, which has yet to be launched in South Africa, uses the brand’s familiar EA888 turbocharged 2.0-litre engine with power figures of 235kW and 420Nm. Acceleration from 0-100km/h is done in 4.5-seconds while running to a top speed of 250km/h. The special edition R’s power has been upped to 245kW, runs from 0-100km/h in 4.6-seconds (slower) and has an electronically-limited top speed of 270km/h.
Upon contacting Volkswagen South Africa to find out about the 20 Year Golf R’s local availability, only the standard Golf 8 R will be sold. The ’20 Year’ model is priced at €59 995 which, when converted, equates to just above the million rand mark. The special edition model will be produced exclusively in the brand’s Wolfsburg factory in Germany.
Volkswagen’s ‘R’ success story began in 2002 with the Golf R32 and its 3.2-litre six-cylinder engine with an output of 177kW. It was the most powerful Golf that the brand had built up to that point. Featuring all-wheel drive in combination with exclusive design and equipment, this highly dynamic car was the technological benchmark in its class. The Golf R32 was an immediate success, and its sales were triple the originally planned amount.
