Top Tips for Towing with Ease

With Summer coming to a close, some of us will be winding down and pulling our boats out of the water for another year. What does this mean? Many motorists will now be towing a trailer. Whether you’re new to it or feel you’re a seasoned pro, it is always a good idea to have a few guidelines to follow, ensuring your trip goes off without a hitch.

  1. Use the right vehicle for the job. Sure, you can add a tow hitch to any vehicle, but if you’re attempting to tow a trailer behind a barely-working sedan, you may have more trouble than you think.
  2. Always check your vehicles owner’s manual before using it to tow a trailer, regardless of the size of your vehicle.
  3. Do a full trailer inspection before heading out. The last thing you want is to be stranded on the side of the highway with a seized wheel bearing or flat tyre.
  4. Ensure the brake and signal lights are in good working order before heading out, too.
  5. Do you research before choosing which tow hitch to purchase. Not all hitches are created equally.
  6. Practice a few times close to home as backing up and turning corners with a trailer in tow is more difficult than you may think.
  7. Protect your investment by erring on the side of caution when securing your boat or other cargo to your trailer.
  8. Adjust your mirrors outwards and consider purchasing additional mirrors to give yourself the best visibility. Your rear-view mirror is likely to be obstructed by the boat or other cargo.
  9. Appoint one spotter to assist you when it comes time to back up.
  10. Take your time! There is no race to be won here, so when it comes to towing, slow and steady is the way to go.
