There’s saving to be had with second-hand soccer accessories

Soccer is one of the most-played sports across the world, with many local clubs offering kids a chance not only to enjoy the sport, but give them the opportunity to make it further – on a professional stage.

Equipment like boots, jerseys, and shin guards are must-haves and can often cost a pretty when purchased as brand-new. When planning for the soccer season, it’s best to be sure that every piece of equipment is in top condition so that you can play your best. More often than not, the product(s) might not be in pristine condition, but the second-hand market then becomes the next best alternative to find what you’re looking for at a much lower rate.

Maybe you or your little brother had dreams of becoming the next Ronaldo when still very young, but then perhaps the soccer phase passed and what was left (in the garage) was old footballing apparel. Or, there’s still a mini set of goal posts and netting taking up space, which would serve somebody else well.

Rather than being tossed in the garbage, mom perhaps decided to keep it for the memories to show off one day. Fortunately, these days, it can be used to free up extra cash for those who really need it. Who knows, there might be a brand-new pair of Adidas Predator or Nike Tempo boots that have simply been gathering dust.

What better place than to put it on Gumtree where it is just waiting to be snapped up for more than half the retail price, and creating a smiling face in the process.

Give them a proper clean

As is generally the case with used pieces of clothing, it needs to be washed and/or steam cleaned before use, to get rid of any stains or odour that might be present. Anything that hasn’t been used in a very long time will have lost its shine and most likely need to be freshened up with a bit of elbow grease.

Gumtree lists tips to make sure your second-hand equipment lasts longer:

Weight damage – Equipment, such as shin guards, can be damaged by the weight of other items stacked on top of them. Store them in a safe place where nothing heavy can fall on them.

Regular cleaning – To avoid baked on dirt and debris, it is best to clean equipment preferably after every game. This keeps it looking neat and allows the material to last longer.

Proper storage – Things like training cones, nets and detachable studs are relatively small and can be lost if not stored adequately. Make sure you have the proper bag(s) so that you can keep track of everything.

Now that you’ve got the knowledge, it’s time to shop! Head to gumtree.co.za or your Gumtree app (click for Apple & Android) and don’t forget to use your location settings to find local automotive vehicle information close to home.
