The Gumtree Guide to Buying Second-Hand Video Games

Saving money is on the forefront of most of our minds, right? And one of the things that usually get the cut when it comes to monthly budget are things required to keep up our hobbies. But what if it doesn’t need to be that way?

Gamers, we’ve got some news for you! With over 10,000 video games and consoles for sale on Gumtree today, I guess you could say there is a market! Purchasing pre-loved video games is a great way to enjoy your hobbies for less.

Here are a few things to consider when purchasing second-hand video games:

Check the fine print

If the advertiser mentions that the game is still in its packaging, ask for a photograph of all wording on the packaging so that you can make sure you do indeed have the right console for the game. Some games require very specific consoles and remotes, or even require extra pieces in order to play. There is nothing worse than coming home with a new game only to find out you can’t play it because you don’t have all the pieces.

Check age-restrictions

This is most important if you are looking to purchase a game for a younger loved one. They may say they want the new ‘Call of Duty’ game, but if they are 5 years old, this may not actually be age-appropriate. In this case, you will want to look for something with a rating of ‘E’, or ‘Everyone’. Other ratings include: ‘E10+’ (older than 10 years of age), ‘T’ (teen), ‘M’ (mature – over 17 years of age), and ‘A’ (adults – 18 and only). Packaging will usually also include the reason for the rating, like for gore or sexual content.

Check for scratches

Make sure you check the actual disc itself to ensure it does not have any scratches. One or two fine tiny, fine scuffs may be okay, but preferably you would want the bottom of the disc to be in perfect condition. This is the only way to know that it will work as it should once you get home.

Ask about added features

Some video game brands sell extra features like bonus levels or extra characters with the sale of brand new games as part of a promotion. It is worth asking the seller of the second-hand version whether such a promotion existed when they bought the game new, and whether or not they used/claimed those promotional codes. You might just luck out!

Do your research

Video game commercials and imagery can make them seem much more exciting than they really are, so it is important to do some research on reviews from people who have played the game. This is a really great way to know whether it is actually worth spending money on.
