The great outdoors await! Find the right tent for your camping needs

Summer might be coming to a close for the next couple of months, but that shouldn’t be a stumbling block to exploring what Mother Nature has to offer. Many people enjoy camping when the weather is less than ideal because it can provide unique landscapes and settings that you wouldn’t be able to experience in any other season.

Fortunately (or unfortunately for some), South Africa doesn’t experience severe winter conditions like snow, though rain and blustering winds are more common. To create the best possible camping experience for yourself, it is best to be as prepared as possible because the last thing you want is to go camping in freezing temperatures with poor quality equipment and not knowing your surroundings.

A tent is the only protection and shelter to protect you from the elements, so it is best to make sure you purchase the correct one for what you want to do. Choosing a tent for camping might sound like a simple exercise, but there are a couple of things to consider when doing so.

Gumtree lists the criteria for finding the best tent:

Choose your type

There are three different types of tents you get – backpacking, camping, and mountaineering tents, and each has its benefits and purposes. Backpacking tents are light, made to be carried long distances, and fit inside a pack.

Camping tents are geared towards space and comfort and aren’t as light as backpacking ones, with it being better to pack in the boot and set up at the campsite. Last but not least is the mountaineering tent designed to withstand stronger conditions like strong winds and even snow.

Size and practicality

You have to determine whether the camping will be done by yourself or with others. The most sure-fire way to see if you’ll have enough space in a tent is to set one up and get inside. Does it have the room inside for what you need? Shops like Cape Union Mart or Outdoor Warehouse are your best options and will assist you in choosing the tent that you need.

Tent poles

Tent poles are commonly available in aluminium, carbon fibre, or fibreglass, each with its own specific benefits. Aluminium and carbon fibre are lighter and last longer, as opposed to fibreglass, which tends to snap when mishandled or under force.
