The Golden Rules of Carpooling Everyone Should Know

We may not be ride-sharing much this year, but before we know it, things will start getting back to normal again. Before the time comes where you need to put together a carpooling group for work or varsity trips, it is important to know the golden rules so everyone is on the same page. Here are our top 10!

  1. Everyone should have the same schedule and same destination to keep things as easy as possible.
  2. Make sure everyone adheres to the etiquette set out by whoever’s car you are in. Everyone must agree on whether smoking, eating, or speaking on the phone are allowed.
  3. Don’t leave the driver waiting; this sets everyone’s day back. Be on time and ready for pick-up!
  4. Don’t let down others in your group by cancelling your driving day 10 minutes before pick-up unless you have a REAL emergency.
  5. Keep in mind that there is a trade off when it comes to how many people you choose to have in your group. Having more people means you have to drive less, but it also means you are driving to more homes on different blocks to pick everyone up. Keep this in mind when deciding on a number.
  6. If you are not a responsible driver, opt out of driving. You are responsible for people’s lives, so keep away from speeding and texting while driving, too.
  7. Keep a schedule of who drives on what days so there is no confusion.
  8. Make it a rule that the driver does not have to make any unexpected stops for anyone in the group. If you need groceries for dinner, you will have to organize that during your lunch period or once you get home. It is not the driver’s responsibility. The same goes for when it is your turn to drive; your passengers should not have to wait in the car and get home later in the evening because you want to make a pit-stop.
  9. Your car is no longer only yours; it is a shared space. Keep it clean and tidy at all times so that your passengers find it a pleasure to be in.
  10. Keep your car maintained to ensure it is always in a safe and reliable working order.
