Take a look at car brands that tried their hand at making boats

Travelling via land and sea is two totally different methods of getting to your destination. One gives you the freedom to explore Mother Nature at your own leisure, while the other is limited by roads and having to make a couple of stops along the way.

Owning a vehicle is by far the cheapest of the two but consider this – what if you’re a petrolhead, had a significant kitty to work with, but you also want to own a luxury boat that reminds you of cars and motoring – bit of a problem, or is it?

That won’t be a problem because there are actually a number of automakers that tried their hand at making boats and it doesn’t look bad at all. Gumtree lists some of the best looking ones:

Lexus LY 650

The yacht was built in collaboration with Italian yacht design studio Nuvolari Lenard that is made with a combination of carbon fibre-reinforced plastic and glass fibre-reinforced plastic. It is powered by twin Volvo Penta IPS*3 engines and also boasts an array of piloting-support functions, including joystick control, fixed-point position-holding at sea, and an auto-flap function. Other luxury features include a Mark Levinson® Surround Sound System and a state-of-the-art salon.

Mercedes-Benz Arrow460–Granturismo

The boat can accommodate up to 10 people and measures in at 14-metres-long, and is powered by a 706kW engine. Other nifty features include retractable large side windows and wood-lined interior. The boat follows a sleek and streamlined design that is equally suitable for day trips and overnight stays on board.

Porsche Gran Turismo Transatlantic 115 hybrid

The GTT 115 has a top speed of over 21 knots with a range of 3 400 nautical miles and is powered by a hybrid system with three variable-speed generators. The superyacht – that only has a limited production run of just seven units – measures in at 35-metres long and its exterior is finished in a high-quality rhodium silver metallic paint.

Toyota PONAM-28V Hybrid

Even though Toyota are the kings of Japanese automotion, they also developed their first hybridised leisure boat that formed part of a feasibility study of hybrid boats from July 2018 to March 2021 in Tokyo. The 10.6-metre boat is powered by an electric motor, fitted with a Lithium-ion Battery and boasting a total capacity of 11kWh. In terms of power, it makes 191kW and 350Nm – on par with some of the latest sports cars.

Aston Martin AM37

The AM37 is the result of two years of research and development, a culmination of a partnership between Aston Martin and Quintessence Yachts. Measuring 11.2-metres in length, the carbon-fibre clad yacht has an estimated top speed of 45 knots and a choice of two 276kW Mercury diesel or two 321kW Mercury petrol engines. There is also an AM37S version with an estimated 50 knots that uses twin 388kW Mercury petrol engines. It doesn’t lack in the luxury department either with niceties like air-conditioning, a refrigerator, microwave oven and coffee machine.
