Volkswagen’s SUV family just got a whole lot bigger. The much-anticipated Taigo compact SUV coupé is ready to be launched in South Africa.
Pronounced ‘tie-go’, it will join the T-Cross and T-Roc as Volkswagen’s trio of compact SUVs in the A0 SUV segment, with the current T SUV range consisting of the T-Cross, T-Roc, Tiguan, Tiguan Allspace and Touareg. Life, Style and R-Line are the trim levels on offer – each with their own standard equipment.
The SUV coupé is powered by a 1.0-litre TSI engine with outputs of 85kW and 200Nm, paired with a seven-speed DSG transmission. In terms of frugality, fuel consumption is rated at 5.4-litres/100km and does the 0 to 100km/h sprint in 11.3-seconds.
It is available in eight exterior colours – two solid paint finishes, five metallic paint finishes and one pearl effect finish. Customers can choose wheel sizes from 16 to 18-inch alloys. The boot space amounts to an impressive 440-litres, with a ground clearance of 137mm.
All models come standard with LED headlights, while the new IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights are offered as standard features in the Style and R-Line trims. The Digital Cockpit comes standard in the Life trim and is enhanced to the Digital Cockpit Pro in the Style and R-Line models. In addition, there is a choice of three different infotainment systems – Composition Colour with a 6.5-inch display (standard in the Life), Composition Media with an 8.0-inch display (standard in Style and R-Line) and the optional Discover Media with an 8.0-inch display format.
Also offered is 2-zone climatronic air conditioning, two USB-C ports and wireless charging (as an option).
The Taigo is packed with a host of lighting and driver assistance systems like IQ.DRIVE Travel Assist, Predictive Adaptive Cruise Control, Side Assist plus Lane Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking Front Assist, Driver Alert System and Park Assist. The brand’s list of optional extras are extensive and includes the popular tilt and slide panoramic sunroof, bigger wheels, a Black Style Package and a host of assistance and safety systems.
The range comes standard with a three-year or 120 000km warranty, three-year or 45 000km service plan and a 12-year anti- corrosion warranty. Official trim levels and pricing will be announced closer to the local launch.
