Struggling for space on your Xbox Series S? Here’s a way to maximise your game library storage

One of the most significant drawbacks of modern gaming systems is the amount of storage space. In the case of the Xbox Series S, which is the digital-only version, it comes with a 512GB capacity. Still, only 364GB of that is useable – compared to the higher-specced Series X that ships with a 1TB internal SSD drive and 802GB of space usable for games and applications.

Because the average game has a size of about 30-50GB, the Series S can only hold a maximum of 10 games of this size. In addition, most optimised games (those made explicitly for X/S consoles) can be as big as 120GB – think Forza Horizon 5 – and on an S console, can take up a considerable amount of space.

One of the main reasons for the games being as big as it is, is the uprated HD quality. The latest generation gaming consoles are recommended to be played on 4K LED TV’s.

There’s nothing worse than running out of storage space and having to delete a game but fear not because there are two ways to increase the internal storage space on your Series S console. Gumtree lists them:

Expansion storage card

This is the pricier option and can set you back just under R5 000 (R4 799 to be exact). The plug-and-play 0.78cm card has a 1TB capacity that slots into the back of the S console and allows you to store and play optimised games (made distinctive by the X/S badge in the bottom left corner of a game card) directly from it.

Setting up is easy – remove the protective cover and insert the card into the dedicated Storage Expansion port on the back of your Xbox Series X|S console. After a few seconds, you’ll see a screen notification letting you know your Expansion Card is ready for play. Because of its price, there is an argument that people might as well buy the Series X because a Series S with an expansion card amounts to the cost of an X anyway – roughly R16 000.

Seagate Xbox Portable Drive

For those that want to enjoy various (Xbox, Xbox 360, or Xbox One) titles and garner a vast collection, this is hands-down the most cost-effective and efficient option – and the one that I use. These hard drives are personalised for use with the Xbox console and have as much as 4TB storage space – depending on the size you choose.

The only snag with this device is that 95% of optimised games cannot be played directly from it but can be used as a storage device to transfer games to and from the internal storage. It might be a less efficient way of doing things, but it does come in handy when space is tight. Like the expansion card, the portable drive is a simple plug-and-play affair while also featuring a unique green LED strip that creates a uniquely immersive experience.
