Resigning the Right Way

You have made the decision – it is time to quit your job and move on. However, most of us do not realise that the way we resign is as important as resigning itself. This process must be conducted with grace and professionalism.

Gumtree gives you the following tips to ensure you leave respectfully with a good transition plan for the future.

  1. First things first, ensure this is the right decision for you. Weigh the pros and cons of quitting and have a plan for the near future to sustain yourself.
  2. Always check your contract (read the fine print too) to know what the required notice period is. Give your employer time to find a replacement and help the transition take place smoothly and efficiently.
  3. Your letter of resignation must be courteous and formal, outlining the reasons (if not personal) along with the notice period and last working date. Always keep a copy with you. Hand this over personally to your manager face-to-face.
  4. During the last few days of your notice period, request your manager for a letter of recommendations and thank them for their leadership over the period you have worked under them. You can also ask for recommendations from other colleagues and departments you have worked and interacted with.

Once you have resigned, it is important to have a robust plan going forward. Gumtree has the following tips and tricks to stay productive during this period:

  1. Have a financial plan in place to sustain you
  2. Take time off for yourself to rejuvenate
  3. Consider what you want to do in the future
  4. Keep busy so boredom and the blues do not set in
