Pros and cons of Using an Aircon in the Car

Have you ever opened your car door and felt a blast of heat as if it were a furnace? Needless to say, the first thing you do after getting in is to switch on your air conditioner to cool off. Even though the aircon provides a comfortable drive home, it does have some disadvantages. Read on to find out more about the pros and cons of using an aircon in your car:

Pros of using an aircon:

  1.     The most obvious advantage of using an aircon in your car is the comfort and protection it offers from sweltering outside temperatures.
  2.     An aircon blowing cool air can help avoid drowsiness on the road. Also, using an aircon can be an excellent way to de-mist your car windshield, enhancing safety greatly.

Cons of using an aircon:

  1.     The most commonly discussed disadvantage of using an aircon is the adverse effect it has on your car’s fuel economy. It is said that using an aircon can increase fuel usage by about 20%. Thus, it is recommended to open the windows instead, especially on shorter drives.
  2.     Spending increased time with the aircon on in your car, especially during long drives can make your skin dry as it strips off its moisture. It can also irritate the mucous membrane leading to mucositis, which can cause pain and discomfort.
  3.  Changes in temperature inside and outside the car due to the aircon are also known to exacerbate respiratory problems and their symptoms. Unclean aircon ducts can be breeding grounds for pollen, dust and bacteria that can lead to respiratory diseases as well as asthma.
