Preventing Mask-Wearing Breakouts

How many times have you forgotten a face mask at home and need to run back to get one? Face masks have become the latest accessories for our everyday activities since the pandemic hit us almost 2 years ago. However, wearing a mask traps humidity when breathing and may increase the risk of acne. Your pores are unable to breathe and result in clogged pores, which can form as breakouts or other skin conditions. Our facial skin is not used to wearing materials for long periods, resulting in chafing and irritated skin patches.

As wearing face masks will be a norm for us for the foreseeable future, these ‘maskne’ (mask acne) prevention tips from Gumtree may help.

What to do:

It’s really important for us to continue wearing masks during the pandemic, so we’ve come up with a few ways to assist and prevent skin issues.

  • Choose the right mask. If you have sensitive skin, choose your mask material wisely and purchase a few of them to rotate so you can wash and replace them.
  • Remove your mask after a few hours to give your skin a chance to breathe. Be sure to be in a space where it is safe to remove your mask.
  • Wash your face every morning and night and don’t forget to moisturise too.
  • Wash fabric masks and alternate masks so you are not wearing one mask for too long.

Following these steps can help but if your acne gets worse, contact your healthcare provider for further assistance.
