Juliet reviews…The Mercedes-AMG A45 S 4Matic+

What is the most you would pay for a hatchback? It is a weird question to ask, but when you look at the price tag of one and it reads around R1.15 million, your mind is quite literally blown. This is the case with the Mercedes-AMG A45 S 4Matic+. I had to get behind the wheel of one to try and wrap my head around this insane price.

Look, it is the most powerful hothatch out there, the engine being the most powerful on the market. It is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit that boasts insane performance figures; 310 kW and 500 Nm of torque. It is a genius bit of engineering and something that has to be experienced to be believed. It will get you to 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds which is faster than that of a Porsche 911. I want to say I put this to the test, but one would need a closed road or a track. That is not to say I didn’t have a lot of fun with this crazy beast of a car. The Race-Start function means you can really have the most fun in a straight line. Left foot brake and get the revs up before blasting down a straight with a huge grin spreading across your face. If you prefer, you are able to change gears for yourself by selecting the manual transmission mode in every drive program, but I think you should just let the car do what it knows how to do. I am not sure you can do better.

This model is All-wheel drive and the setup is such that it makes throwing this in to twisty corners rather confidence-inspiring. The grip is unmatched and you feel like you can drive this car as hard as you want and you won’t come unstuck. This might not be the best attitude to have on a public road, but if you take it on a track, be sure to give it your all.

The sound is something else. What would an AMG be without the crackles and pops?

The interior boasts the MBUX infotainment system and as much as it all looks very modern and almost futuristic, it is also quite comprehensive. It will take you a long time to get to grips with everything that is on offer in this system.

And if you think that the price tag will scare people off in South Africa, think again. “South Africans love the AMG brand: in fact, it’s the third biggest market in the world. With the presentation of this, our most powerful and most dynamic compact sports car, we are also reinforcing the significance of this segment for our growth strategy,” said Selvin Govender, Marketing Director for Mercedes-Benz Cars South Africa.

There you have it. Even if you think it is crazy to pay such an exorbitant price for a hatchback, there are those who won’t even bat an eyelid because it is all about the passion, and the drive!
