Juliet Reviews…The Ford Ecosport 1.5 Ambiente Auto

The Ford EcoSport first hit our shores back in 2013 and it arrived with a bang. It quickly became the best-selling car in its segment. To be fair, there wasn’t a lot on offer back then, but fast forward to 2020 and this compact SUV segment is bursting at the seams. Just last year saw the arrival of the new Volkswagen T-Cross, the Hyundai Venue and the updated Haval H2, to name but a few. Ford has really had to up its game to keep the Ecosport relative and popular. Enter this entry-level automatic model that I am sure many will appreciate.

Automatic transmissions are becoming more and more popular so it makes sense that Ford would want to offers its customers, whose budgets may not stretch to the top trim levels such as the Trend and Titanium, an option such as this Ambiente Auto. The six-speed transmission adds a new dimension to the Ecosport line up. There are now seven derivatives on offer starting with the 1.5 Ambiente with a five-speed manual. This auto also utilises the same 1.5-litre three- cylinder petrol engine that puts out 91 kW and 151 Nm of torque. There is also a 1.5-litre turbodiesel option producing 74 kW and 205 Nm.

The Ambiente may be the entry level model but it still has standard features that should please most customers. Features such as Bluetooth and Voice Control, as well as two USB ports, six speakers and a 4.-inch screen. But where it really shines is in terms of safety. The Ecosport could be considered one of the safest cars in its segment with ABS brakes, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with Traction Control (TC), as well as Roll Stability Control (RSC). That is not even mentioning the standard six airbags. The 1.0 EcoBoost-powered models get seven airbags and are also equipped with Hill Launch Assist (HLA) that makes pulling off on steep inclines easier, along with Ford’s Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

All EcoSport models come standard with Ford Protect which includes a four-year/60 000km service plan, three-year unlimited distance roadside assistance and four-year/120 000km comprehensive warranty. This is complemented by a five-year/unlimited distance corrosion warranty.

If your budget can stretch to the Trend or Titanium then I would consider it. The Ambiente is perfect if your budget doesn’t allow more, but the other models offer more in terms of power and spec that I think you will be very grateful for in the long run. But with that said, Ford has made a rather smart move with this vehicle.
