Juliet reviews…The Audi A6

The new Audi A6 may have arrived in South Africa earlier this year (2020), but this week was the first time the media had a chance to engage with it, albeit via a virtual launch. With seven generations before it, the new Audi A6 is more digitized and more versatile than ever before. Even though South Africa has seen a steady decline in the C-segment sedan market (2697 sold in 2015 compared to 1118 in 2019), the A6 remains a significant model for Audi. It just means that Audi has had to choose the right models with the right spec to offer its customers. Let’s take a closer look.

There are three models available in South Africa, namely the 40 TDI S tronic with its 2.0-litre diesel engine offering 140 kW and 400 Nm of torque, next up is the 45 TDI Tiptronic with its 3.0-litre quattro engine producing 183 kW and 600 Nm of torque, and topping the range is the rather spirited S6 TFSI quattro that will blow your hair back with 330 kW and 600 Nm. This beast will get you to 100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds.

Step inside the cabin and you will notice that most of the buttons and controls have been replaced by two large displays which you would have seen in the new A7 Sportback and Audi Q8. It is all about digitization in this cabin. And like a Smartphone, there is a high degree of personalization with buttons being placed freely in the top display. In the bottom display, you can create up to 27 individual shortcuts for key vehicle functions and favourites. The top screen measures 10.1-inches while the bottom screen is a 8.6-inch display. It’s all very modern!

In keeping things simple due to this being such a tricky segment, Audi is offering two packages on this new A6. The Comfort package includes a four-zone climate control, comfort key, seat heating function in the front, a storage package, and operating buttons in black gloss with haptic feedback. The second offering is a Sport Package, and this comprises of an S Line exterior package, contour and ambient lighting, high-gloss styling, and Sport suspension.

You can see on the styling side of things, this new A6 has sharper edges and more striking and defined lines. It is a good-looking sedan, no doubt. And it is ever so slightly bigger and you can choose from a list of 14 exterior colours. But if it is the sportiest of sporty looks you are after, then you the S6 is obtainable with a black styling package (enhanced black accents to the exterior). 18” wheels are standard on the A6 40 and 45 TDI models with an option to upgrade to a wheel size of up to 21”. The S6 comes standard with a 20” wheel, with an upgrade choice of two different 21” wheel designs.
