Never has there been an icon quite like the Ford Mustang. If you have ever seen the car chase with Speed McQueen driving the Bullitt, you will know exactly what I mean. With 9.8 million Mustangs being sold since 1965, you must know just how popular this car is.
South Africa is not immune to this popularity either. We have seen over 2 640 sold here since 2016. The new Ford Mustang has just arrived on our shores and according to Ford it is sleeker, faster and more technologically advanced.
There are slight changes to the design of the new Mustang with a new bonnet profile that is lower, with integrated air vents combined with a revised lower grille design. The rear bumper has also been remodelled and quad tailpipes are standard on the 5.0-litre GT model. These will bring maximum enjoyment to your ears, I can assure you.
Speaking of the V8, the model line-up in South Africa will offer the 2.3-litre EcoBoost petrol engine, the 5.0-litre V8 (both in either Fastback or Convertible guise) as well as the iconic Bullitt model.
Although the 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine produces 213 kW of power and 441 Nm of torque, it just doesn’t have that throaty roar the 5.0-litre delivers. It doesn’t engage quite the same either, and for obvious reasons. The 5.0-litre V8 puts out 331 kW and a whopping 529 Nm of torque. This is supported by the introduction of Ford’s new high-pressure direct injection and low-pressure port fuel injection system which improves low-end torque. This means the fun that can be had with this car will certainly give you butterflies. Sure, the numbers might not sound staggering to the true motoring enthusiasts out there, but I can assure you, once you are behind the wheel of this Mustang, you won’t want for anything more.
The interior doesn’t necessarily match the enjoyment factor that the rest of the car provides. It is not as refined and unfortunately the build quality doesn’t feel good enough. With that being said, there are a few new elements that have elevated it somewhat, such as the customisable all-digital 12-inch instrument cluster. But some might feel that at this price point, one can expect a little bit more in terms of refinement.
The Mustang might not sit neck and neck with its direct rivals when it comes to performance figures or dynamics, but there is no denying the charm that a Mustang exudes that you just don’t get from any other car. There are few cars for under a million rand that can provide as much enjoyment and/or as much attention. You will need to love the spotlight to drive a Mustang because you will never escape the eyes that follow you as you pass. You may just feel like an icon yourself.
