If you’re a petrolhead living in South Africa, these are motoring events you simply need to attend

Some people have dreams of visiting a bucket list location like the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, for example, while others would love to watch their favourite sports team live in a stadium. While those places are certainly mesmeric for different reasons, they often cost a pretty penny – added to the fact that the rand isn’t the strongest currency.

Where petrolheads are concerned, the annual Goodwood Festival of Speed event in the United Kingdom and simply driving on the high-speed Autobahn in Germany is considered the ‘holy grail’ of motoring. Not to be left behind, South Africa also has its very own motoring events that is not only more attainable, but also recognised across the world.

With Covid-19 restrictions regarding large crowd gatherings being eased, motoring events are slowly starting to resume again. Petrolheads have long been deprived of tyre smoke filling their nostrils and hearing tuned engines scream towards the redline. The Franschhoek Motor Museum is another popular spot in the Cape Winelands where car enthusiasts can feast their eyes on more than 220 classic and modern vehicles.

Before wanting to visit all the famous overseas bucket list spots, there are a number of must-visit motoring events as well. Gumtree lists some of the racing events across South Africa that an avid petrolhead simply has to attend:
