How to make your online ad more attractive to potential buyers

It might seem like a simple task but putting together the perfect advert when selling an item online can sometimes turn out to be a frustrating exercise. Presentation is key, with the aim to make the product as attractive as possible that generates leads and translates into a sale.

Gumtree is one of South Africa’s largest online marketplace platforms and suggests a few tips to posting an attractive online advert:

KISS (Keep It Short and Simple)

Instead of writing a long and detailed description, just be straight to the point and mention the attractive characteristics of the product. For example, “The model was imported from Germany in 2001 with official documents and well kept in pristine condition using only original parts.

Clear hero image

Before a potential buyer even clicks on the ad, the hero image is the first thing they see. A low quality picture won’t attract much interest as it gives the impression of some sort of scam. Well taken and clear images means effort was put into the advert.

Check the spelling

Avoid using a mixture of upper and lowercase letters as well as shortened words because it is frustrating for the buyer to read and also shows a lack of interest from the seller. Just to be sure, ask a friend or family member to read through it again for reassurance.

Price point

It is worth checking the Gumtree classifieds to get an idea of the estimate selling price for a specific item. This gives you a more accurate list price – also taking into account factors like the overall condition or age. Also, mention in the description that the price is either negotiable or not.

Now that you’ve got the knowledge, it’s time to shop! Head to or your Gumtree app (click for Apple & Android) and don’t forget to use your location settings to find local service information close to home.
