How to choose the sweetest watermelon at the shop

Choosing the perfect watermelon can often prove to be something of a mission because its virtually impossible to know how sweet one is just by looking at it. Believe it or not but there are actually a number of physical ways in which to know how sweet, ripe or watery a watermelon is on the inside.

Watermelons are summer seasonal fruits so expect most fruit and vegetable outlets to stock them to the brim. Nothing is worse than buying an underripe watermelon. Gumtree lists a few ways to make sure you don’t end up disappointed when choosing one:

Look for dry spots

Though dry and web-like spots might look unflattering on its surface, they indicate a watermelon with plenty of sugar. Make sure to look for these spots when choosing one.

Proper shape

The trick here is to look for one that is beach ball round. They generally come in two shapes – beach ball round and oval. The rounder ones are the ones to get because they are much sweeter than the oval ones that tend to be watery.

Give it a knock

Knocking the watermelon is one of the common ways to check. It is all about listening to the sound A deep and hollow sound lets you know that it has more water and is likely riper. A dense-sounding one can indicate that the watermelon is not fully ripened.

Check the stem

The stem should be dry and yellow in colour, while a green stem, on the other hand, means that the watermelon is not yet ripe and won’t be that sweet.
