Having a Baby? Know what to Pack in Your Hospital Bag

If your due date is just around the corner, you’re probably starting to think about what you could need to pack with you for your hospital stay. While hospitals do provide quite a few goodies for babies and new parents, there are a few essentials and luxuries you may wish to have on hand.

Here are a few must-haves for both you and baby for the most comfortable hospital stay possible:

For You

  • Slippers and socks
  • Robe and nightgown or other loose fitting pjs
  • Nursing bras
  • Large underwear
  • Loose, comfortable clothes to wear home
  • Toothbrush
  • Face wash and moisturizer
  • Body wash
  • Hair elastics
  • Lip balm
  • Slip slops for the shower
  • Nipple cream
  • Nursing pads
  • Thick, post-partum maxi pads
  • Favourite pillow
  • Snacks and drinks
  • Change for vending machines
  • Sweet treats to suck on during labour for energy
  • Smartphone
  • Camera
  • Phone charger
  • Birth plan and all other necessary paperwork
  • Small Bluetooth speaker to play soothing music during labour

For Baby

  • Infant car seat
  • Going-home outfit
  • A few sleepers and onesies in both newborn and 0-3 month sizes (you never know how small or large your baby will be!)
  • Unscented baby wipes and a small pack of diapers just in case (your hospital should provide these, but if you have a preferred brand, you may want to bring those yourself)
  • Bum cream
  • Bottles and formula if you are not breastfeeding
  • Swaddling blankets
