Online classifieds site Gumtree is the largest website in South Africa according to Effective Measure, the official traffic measurement partner of IAB SA.

In April 2018, the online classifieds site attracted 5.2m unique SA browsers putting it at the top of the list above News24 with 5.1 million and TimesLive with 4.2 million. Gumtree is the only site in the top five which is not a news-related website.

Gumtree also recorded 139m page views in the month – more than double the number of any other site in the top 20.

According to Claire Cobbledick, Gumtree SA’s Head of Core Business, this is part of a continuing trend of improving internet participation, as South Africans take their financial matters into their own hands.

“More and more South Africans are buying and selling on Gumtree either as a side hustle or as a way of building businesses – and as more South Africans see results and cheaper access to data, these numbers will only increase”.

The site is also particularly popular with females, who make up more than half of their user base.
