Ford’s Mustang and collective special edition model range just got a lot bigger with the launch of the California.
It is the latest of three exclusive Mustang models, previously comprising of the Bullitt (launched in 2019) and the Mach 1 (launched in 2021), and will be limited to just 100 units locally with a price tag of R1.1-million. Locally, the Mustang remains a favourite in the sports car segment, and at the end of May 2022, a total of 3 652 units have found new homes since the model was first launched in South Africa in 2015.
The original California version featured a blacked-out grille, fog lights, side racing stripes, and a Shelby-inspired spoiler. Ford put a limited number of units into production for 1968. The new one features exterior bits like a honeycomb front grille, GT/CS logos, side air scoops, 19-inch five-spoke alloy wheels, quad 4.5-inch tailpipes, and a rear wing (from the GT Performance Package).
Customers can also choose from a range of nine exterior colours available in either solid or metallic finishes. The model’s new signature shades are Atlas Blue and Cyber Orange Tri-Coat, featuring black and grey detailing.
More than a special edition
Inside you’ll find red-stitched temperature-adjustable leather seats part-finished in grey Miko suede. The GT/CS logo is also found on the seats and floor mats, while the instrument panel is finished in Carbon Hex aluminium with a unique Mustang California Special badge.
Safety and convenience features are taken care of by Ford’s SYNC®3 communication and entertainment system that allows for smartphone connectivity, audio, navigation, as well as climate control functions with conversational voice commands and a central eight-inch touch screen. The system is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Adaptive Cruise Control with Pre-Collision Assist and Lane Keeping Alert are the driver assistance systems offered.
Under the bonnet is a naturally aspirated 5.0-litre V8 engine with outputs of 330kW and 529Nm, mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. This allows it to complete the 0-100km/h sprint in 4.5-seconds. Stopping power is taken care of by large-diameter 380x34mm ventilated discs and six-piston fixed aluminium Brembo callipers in front, along with 330x25mm discs and floating Brembo callipers at the rear.
A Ford Protect warranty comprising a four-year or 120 000km warranty, a four-year or unlimited distance Roadside Assistance and a five-year or unlimited distance corrosion warranty is offered as standard. In addition, customers can purchase additional service or maintenance plans for up to eight years or 150 000km. The warranty can be extended up to seven years or 200 000km, while the Roadside Assistance can be extended for an additional one or two years.
