In many markets, in an attempt to reduce emissions, sales of hybrid and electric cars are heavily incentivised by a reduction in government taxes. Sadly, in SA this is not the case.
Developing new technologies in ‘greening’ the car as we know it requires billions in investment into research and development from vehicle makers. Because sales are still only a fraction of mainstream petrol and diesel-powered cars, unit costs are high, and because of low sales volumes, resale value just about zilch.
