“Necessity is the mother of invention”. And this has never rung truer for the world as it does today.
Now that South Africa is in the middle of Alert Level 4 of the lockdown due to the pandemic, restaurants and businesses have been forced to think out-of-the-box to survive during this economic downtime. So, what have they come up with? Drive-through events and creative take outs are gaining popularity slowly but surely in the country.
Gumtree outlines some of these drive-through events you can participate in to support the restaurant industry.
1. Restaurants such as Disoufeng Pub in Soweto have started a drive-through where patrons are served their meals on a wooden plank in the comfort of their cars. The pub provides everything from food, refreshments, spices and cutlery to their customers without them ever getting out of their vehicles. Ocean Basket franchises in Umhlanga, Mokopane and Newcastle are also offering this roadhouse-style dining option to its patrons.
2. Drive-ins at the movies have become even more popular in South Africa during the pandemic. For those interested in attending one of these, contact the Sandton Drive-In Power by Ster-Kinekor or the Eastgate Mall. This includes delicious take outs and restaurant menus to choose from.
3. Fourway’s Molly Malone’s launched their Roadhouse Drive-In, which combines the magic of a typical drive-in and their delicious grub in the comfort of your own car.
4. Some restaurants are innovating by preparing heat-and-eat options or meal kits that people can drive-through and pick up whenever they need restaurant-style meals for date night or other special events.
