Citroën C3 Aircross
I only just told you all about Citroën coming back in to South Africa and details of the new C3. I briefly mentioned the C3 Aircross but with a massive rival such as the Volkswagen T-Cross having also just arrived in the country, I thought it only fair to chat about this newcomer as well.
The new C3 Aircross certainly doesn’t look like any of its rivals. And this is exactly what Citroën wants. Their cars need to stand out from the crowd and they have ensured that this is exactly what the C3 Aircross does. Especially with its Spicy Orange accents all over the place. Which, by the way, you have no choice but to opt for. You can, however, choose between three paint colours for the body of the car. Those being White, Platinum Grey or Soft Sand.
Step inside and you are met with the same Spicy Orange colour on some touchpoints and surrounds. However, the cabin is spacious, modern and simple. There is minimal clutter and something that will stand out straight away is the seven-inch touchscreen which operates most of the features in the car. You can opt between two trim levels, namely Feel or Shine. Although the Feel is specced well, the Shine ‘outshines’ it with extras such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Smart Entry and Keyless Start as well as Climate Control. But both models have an impressive list of safety features, both of which boast six airbags and Driver Attention Alert.
The C3 Aircross is fitted with 16” alloy wheels with the option of stylish 17-inch diamond-effect aluminium wheels on the Shine model.
The seats are noticeably comfortable, in fact, it was one of the first things I commented on when I stepped inside the C3 Aircross. Something else it boasts is generous space. The rear bench, like the T-Cross, can slide forward. But not only that, the 60/40 split seats can slide forward and back independently of each other. It just means the C3 Aircross offers more in terms of practicality. The boot space is 410-litres, but if you opt for the Shine model you get the sliding seats I speak of which will then give you a generous 520-litres.
Engine-wise, there is only one choice available and that is the award-winning 1.2 PureTech 81 kW turbopetrol unit. It is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission only. With performance numbers such as 81 kW and 205 Nm, you can’t expect too much out of this engine. Especially up at high altitude. I expect it will feel a little more punchy at the coast.
I am so glad that Citroën has re-entered the country because it has brought excellent products such as this C3 Aircross to segments that can do with a little shake up. The customer now has more choice than ever. Boy, am I glad I am not you. It is a tough call to make.
