Building on success has become a way of life for the ever-expanding BB Group and Arnold Du Plessis

The BB Group established its roots in South Africa back in 1959 in Pietersburg as a sole Datsun dealer. It went from strength to strength in the ensuing years, later extending into areas like Phalaborwa, Mokopane, Tzaneen, Middelburg, and Pretoria.

The fully-fledged automotive dealer group has a core specialty towards Nissan models, while also incorporating a host of other well-known brands like Ford, Hyundai, and Kia, selling new and used cars, as well as supplying parts and providing service to existing and prospective customers.
The group has a strong footprint in Welkom on the Free State Goldfields with the recent acquisition of the Haval, Hyundai, and Renault dealerships in the city since 2020, with the dealership number rising to 55 and representing 19 different brands. In 2011, the BB Group of Polokwane in Limpopo Province claimed the Best Dealer Group accolade.

The business is headed by Arnold Du Plessis, who also happens to be an avid motor enthusiast at heart, backed with extensive knowledge in preparing and racing GT-Rs, while also participating at the recently-concluded Simola Hillclimb event in Knysna, where he piloted the custom ‘Black Hawk’ Nissan Patrol, built exclusively by BBMotorSport.

Astute business model

Arnold’s version features a bit more spice under the bonnet – in that it is fitted with a supercharger, helping him take top spot at the 2022 Simola Hillclimb event in the B9 class with a time of 58.816-seconds. As a bit of reference, the Patrol is currently sold as brand-new in South Africa with a starting price of R1.6-million. The purpose-built SUV weighs 2 746kg and is powered (in stock trim) by a 5.6-litre V8 engine with maximum outputs of 298kW and 560Nm, mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission.

The annual event is a great way not only for petrolheads from all over to enjoy intense racing action, but also serves as an opportunity for automakers and dealers alike to garner exposure for their business(es) on a broader scale. What better way to do so than with the boss driving one of the makes and models they represent.

In addition to the plethora of high-performance cars on show, Nissan also had a large contingent of high-performance GT-R’s competing, including the BB Motorsport 2013 Nissan R35 GT-R previously driven by Wilhelm Baard. It is the second consecutive year that Suzuki, one of the automakers selling models under the BB Group banner, was also one of the event’s major sponsors.

The business is also actively growing, with a range of vacancies also advertised on their various social media platforms – Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok and Youtube. From a business and racing perspective, there is more to come from the BB Group – watch this space.
