Bike Racks: What You Need to Know

You’ve found the ultimate bicycle for you, but now what? While it is great to be able to ride close to home, or to ride to work, you might be looking for a little more adventure. Many wine farms and national parks are equipped with biking trails, but you’ll have to get our bike there first! All year round, a bike rack is a definite must-have for families looking to get out and about with their rides.

Here is a simple guide to the different types of bike racks, their benefits and their drawbacks.

  1. Trunk-Mounted Racks

A trunk-mounted rack is one of the most basic, adjustable, and affordable options. This rack is basically a small frame with a whole bunch of straps to hold your bikes onto the back of your vehicle.

  • Hitch-Mounted Racks

This type of bike rack is more secure than a trunk-mounted rack, but only works with vehicles that have a receiving hitch connection. It allows you to hitch your bikes behind your car in a way that reduces drag and conserves fuel.

  • Roof-Mounted Racks

Roof-mounted racks are also very secure, and carry multiple bikes on the roof of your vehicle. While secure and versatile, roof racks often reduce fuel efficiency due to drag, and you will need to constantly be aware of the height of your vehicle for clearance beneath low trees or tunnels.

  • Trailers

For very expensive specialty bikes or the transportation of more than a few bikes, we would recommend looking into a trailer rather than a rack. While these are the most expensive option, they are worth it if you are in need of full protection and easier loading and unloading.  Don’t forget that you will need a vehicle that has or allows for the installation of a tow bar and is strong enough to tow a small load, of course!

Now that you’ve got the knowledge, it’s time to shop! Head to gumtree.co.za or your Gumtree app (click for Apple & Android) and don’t forget to use your location settings to find a bike rack close to home.
