Another One! Volkswagen adds the Taigo SUV to the local line-up

Volkswagen already boasts a stellar SUV line-up and now they’ve added another member to the family. Everyone, meet the Taigo. The newcomer will launch in the first quarter of 2022.

Though specs are pricing are unconfirmed at this point, the Taigo comes with full LED headlights, a digital cockpit and latest generation infotainment systems. In addition, the popular tilt and slide panoramic sunroof will also be offered. As far as engine and transmission options go, the SUV will only be available locally with a 1.0-litre TSI engine rated at 85kW and 200Nm, mated to a seven-speed DSG transmission.

Other overseas engine options include a 1.0-litre TSI with a choice of 70kW or 81kW variants, a 1.5-litre TSI with 110kW. It’s likely that the locally sold Taigo will feature a range of niceties like a multifunctional steering wheel, air conditioning, Autonomous Emergency Braking Front Assist and Lane Assist.

The model is closely associated with the T-Cross, where it is built alongside at the factory in Pamplona, Spain. Rear load space will probably be in the same range as the T-Cross (400+ litres).

In terms of its rivals, the model will most likely compete with other newly-launched offerings like the Toyota Corolla Cross, Haval Jolion and Hyundai Creta.

The A0 segment SUV features a crossover body style and raised seating position. A bit of a fun fact about the Taigo name – it is derived from a combination of ‘tiger’ and ‘Taiga’, which is a forest in the Northern Hemisphere.

To showcase just how big the German brand’s T SUV range is – by the end of 2022, it will consist of seven models namely the T-Cross, Taigo, T-Roc, Tiguan, Tiguan Allspace, Tiguan R (launching in Q3 of 2022) and the Touareg.
