Mahindra models in the passenger segment don’t really feature very high on the radar of South African buyers, but are doing well in the commercial sector due to their hardiness. With the Scorpio, Mahindra hopes perceptions will change and has gone all-out to offer an attractive specification/price combination.
Why is this model so important?
It is all-new and a world removed from its predecessor, targeting an entirely new audience. With affordability becoming an increasingly important buying consideration, potential buyers in the large SUV segment will do well taking a closer look.
What does this mean?
Because Mahindra does not compete in the badge-sensitive premiums segment, its offerings are honest, no-fuss solutions to what most people require – more affordable mobility. All-new, fully-equipped Scorpio models are available at half or even a third of the price of more suave and sophisticated mainstream offerings in the market.
What’s the fuss about?
The latest Scorpio has an all-new design, sturdy 88kW/280Nm mHawk 2.2-litre intercooled turbodiesel engine, new five-speed gearbox, a more advanced interior with touchscreen, satnav and Bluetooth, a cabin execution that borders on the luxurious, and improved ride and handling. It even has a voice-based warning system to provide audible alerts when a door is left ajar, a seat belt is not connected, the brake fluid level is low or the fuel tank’s reserve is reached, sensor-activated automatic headlights and windscreen wipers, and a sophisticated tyre pressure monitoring system that provides real-time information on the exact tyre pressure in each tyre. In terms of specification for the SUV market, it is right up there with the best, with that huge price advantage.
A 4×4 and 4×2 are available, with models covered by a three-year/100 000 km warranty and a three-year/60 000 km service plan.
