5 Baby Essentials to Buy Second-Hand

Welcoming a new addition to the family is such a blessing, yet comes with both excitement and a stress of the unknown. One such unknown is what to buy and how much to spend. There seem to be lists galore online of things to get to prepare for your little one’s arrival, and once you add up the costs, it’s daunting!

The good news is that a few of the larger baby essentials are super easy to find online second-hand. All veteran moms will tell you: don’t splurge on only brand-new items for your babe! The cost can be astronomical, it is often unnecessary, and some items are essentials for such a short period of time that it really does not seem worth the money to purchase it new.

Here are 5 baby essentials to buy second-hand on Gumtree:

  1. Strollers. There are so many amazing stroller brands out there, and you do want to choose wisely as this will be your go-to method of baby transportation when out and about. However, purchasing brand new can come with a hefty price tag, so why not find the same thing for cheaper on Gumtree?
  2. Cots. Whether you would prefer a trendy Scandinavian-style wooden cot, a popular moses basket, or simply a camp cot for easy moving, the main thing to remember is that safety is essential, while comfort is just a bonus. Once you find one you like on Gumtree, do your research before purchasing to ensure your babe will be in safe hands while they sleep, as not all items advertised for sleep are actually safe for sleep (baby swings or bouncers, for example).
  3. High Chairs. Most high chairs these days are plastic with removable trays and even removable cushions. Because of this, finding second-hand versions in good condition on Gumtree is an easy task! Don’t forget to make sure the high chair you are purchasing comes with a safety harness or seat belt to ensure safety.
  4. Baby Carriers. Brand new baby carriers can cost upwards of R1,500 or more, which is a lot to fork out, especially given the fact that they can only be used for the first couple years. Due to their ability to be washed and their fairly short usability period, baby carriers are another item that are great when purchased second-hand.
  5. Bouncing Seats or Swings. These items are a huge blessing to parents between the ages of around 4 months and when they are able to crawl and get around on their own as they keep babes happy and occupied with little to no effort. Fortunately for new parents, there is no need to purchase these brand-new! But don’t forget, never leave a baby sleeping unattended in a baby swing due to proven safety risks.

Now that you’ve got the knowledge, it’s time to shop! Head to gumtree.co.za or your Gumtree app (click for Apple & Android) and don’t forget to use your location settings to find these items close to home.
