Whether you’ve received a few new clothing pieces for your birthday, want to clear out items you haven’t worn in a while, or simply need an influx of cash, there are a few things to consider before listing your items for sale on Gumtree.
- Are your items worth selling? Yes, what is trash to you may be treasure to another, but some items are truly meant for the trash or to be donated to someone who can restore them and give them to those who are in desperate need. If your items are extremely worn down, have holes, stains, are pilling, or have faded material, you are unlikely to get money for them. Rather, why not place an ad on Gumtree listing your goods for free? This way you get to clear space in your closet while also helping someone out.
- Have you taken good photos? Once you have the pieces you would like to sell, give them a good wash and take multiple, clear images of all different angles. No one will want to buy your vintage purse without seeing it, or if it is dirty.
- What are the unique selling points? It is important to include a good description of your item including when you purchased it, how old the item is, what the brand is, the quality, the size, and even the original price. The more information you include the better.
- Don’t overprice. You have worn these items, so even if they are in good condition, they are still used. Consider being fair on your pricing to entice someone to purchase your item over a brand new one. If your item is unworn with the tags still on, you will still need to give at least a 20-30% discount on the original price you paid.
Now that you’ve got the knowledge, it’s time to list your items! Head to gumtree.co.za or your Gumtree app (click for Apple & Android) and don’t forget to use your location settings to find buyers close to home.
