16 Things to Get Rid of Before Making a Big Move

We can all be honest. Packing is the worst part about moving homes, by far. It takes hours and hours, and can be a complete hassle. To make the process a little less gruelling, let’s plan ahead by decluttering before the big move. Here are the top 16 things to donate or throw away before you move.

  1. Unused appliances like a bread maker you haven’t taken out of the cupboard in 5 years.
  2. Scratched pots and pans that need replacement anyways.
  3. Mugs, glasses, bowls, utensils and plates. Decide how many you actually use at any given time and donate the rest.
  4. Expired food. Check the labels of everything in your pantry before packing them.
  5. All furniture that is either damaged, won’t fit in your new place, or that will cost more to move than to replace.
  6. Any books or games you don’t love or have read and played enough.
  7. DVDs and CDs. Let’s be real: when was the last time you used either of those?
  8. Old and half-used soaps, shampoos, lotions, and other beauty products.
  9. Expired medications.
  10. Any towels you would be too embarrassed to allow a guest to use.
  11. Old paperwork that no longer has any real value to you. Consider creating a digital version of some other documents you actually DO need to help declutter, too.
  12. Half-used notebooks or notepads.
  13. Any half-complete art or craft projects, as well as any craft or art materials you do not regularly use.
  14. Any old or stained linen, or linen that no longer fits any of the bed sizes currently in your home.
  15. Any clothes you have not worn in the last year.
  16. Any broken toys, or toys your children have not played with in the last six months.
